We want our art and passion work to be morally hygienic, the meat we eat to have happily died for us. In response to the outcry that proof-of-work NFT activity contributes to exorbitant carbon emissions, platforms like NiftyGateway, Superrare and Zora have conceded to carbon offsetting. 1 Hicetunc famously uses the proof-of-stake process on Tezos blockchain to mint "clean NFTs".2
There has been a lot written about the environmental impact so I won't belabor it. 3
Kyle McDonald's project, "ethereum-nft-activity" uses Python scripts to pull transaction data from popular NFT art platforms and makes estimations of daily carbon output according to Ethereum activity across 75 popular NFT art platforms. A separate repo contains the scripts for using benchmarks of GPU power to find the per-day energy consumption of Ethereum.
McDonald admits there may be a high margin of error between the intensities of mining pool companies, but what I find most fascinating is the rising amount of fees as part of NFT transactions over time.

Counterarguments to ecological critiques include:
The cognitive dissonance of our changing world has never been stronger and carbon offsetting begs the question of whether the ends justifies the means. (This is also not to make light of our general gig-working artist who has 2 or 3 precarious jobs, most of which have been made redundant by Covid. I do have friends who paid rent by cashing out bitcoin and eth at some point.)
What I find hard to determine at the moment is how remediation and renewal from applying offsets fares against the net harm we do to the environment. Looked at closely, efforts like carbon capturing and reforestation require time, environmental planning and maintenance and to succeed.6 7 8
